Depart in Peace

“Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word …”

Luke 2:29

There are parts of the Divine Service that I especially love to sing. One of those parts is the Nunc Dimittus. In Latin, “Nunc Dimittus” means, “now lettest thou depart.” Simeon’s words of awe, joy, and peace fill my heart with elation and expectation. It gives me goosebumps to think that he was holding the Christ, the baby Jesus, in his arms.

What an incredible moment; to see the face of the Redeemer!

The Holy Spirit’s promise that he would see the child before his death was fulfilled. God kept His promise to Simeon.

And He will keep His promise to us. We, too, will see Him face-to-face at the end of our earthly lives. What a wonderful time to look forward to!

Father, grant all Your people peace as they look forward to seeing You in heaven. Amen.

Reflect: Do you look forward to seeing Jesus face-to- face?
